My heart hurts for our colleagues and friends following reports of an active shooter on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, campus, leaving three people dead and one seriously injured. We share in the fear and pain that our colleagues on the UNLV campus are coping with today.  

Unfortunately, the United States has broken records this year for the number of mass shootings. We know that training for these situations saves lives. UC Davis offers active shooter training and survival workshops for community members. UC Davis Police and Fire Departments, in coordination with local emergency response agencies, regularly drill and practice to prepare for such an event. These drills and trainings occur on both the Davis and Sacramento campuses. In addition, all of the UC campus police departments are undergoing refresher training for their respective communities and for first responders. 

We know that the weight of global tragedies continues to burden our community. I encourage our students, faculty and staff to use the resources we have in place to help manage the grief and trauma this incident may raise.
