Chancellor Emeritus Larry N. Vanderhoef was admitted to the UC Davis Medical Center Monday, Dec. 3, to begin rehabilitative treatment following an ischemic stroke this past weekend.

He was transferred from Sutter Davis Hospital, where he received emergency care after the initial signs of stroke.

“This wasn’t quite the holiday surprise I’d anticipated,” said Chancellor Emeritus Vanderhoef. “But I’m thankful for the excellent care I’ve received and I’m determined to bounce back quicker than quick.”

Vanderhoef served as UC Davis’ chancellor from 1994 to 2009 and as its provost/executive vice chancellor for 10 years prior.

As chancellor emeritus, he is teaching an undergraduate biology course at UC Davis and at National Taiwan University.

He also serves on the U.S. Department of Education’s National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity and chaired the California Public Utilities Commission’s Independent Review Panel investigating the 2010 San Bruno Gas Explosion.

Vanderhoef is writing a book about his 25 years on the fifth floor of Mrak Hall.
