* April 5, Monday -- James Battey, director of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders and head of the National Institutes of Health panel on stem cell research, will speak on "The Challenge and Opportunity of Human Embryonic Stem Cells." The NIH panel was formed in 2001 to enable research on human embryonic stem cells while implementing President Bush's decision to restrict federal funds to research involving a limited number of cell lines that were available in August 2001. The talk, which is part of the Major Issues in Modern Biology series, is supported by the Storer Life Sciences Lectureship and the School of Veterinary Medicine Dean's Office. The talk will begin at 4:10 p.m. in Room 170 Schalm Hall on the UC Davis campus.
