A team from the UC Davis Fire Department is in its second week on the front lines of the Shelly Fire in Siskiyou County.

The firefighters left campus July 9 aboard Brush Truck 34, bound for the blaze, which started July 3 and had grown to 15,000 acres with 5% containment as of this morning (July 16), according to Cal Fire.

The fire is near the California-Oregon border.

“Due to hot dry weather and difficult access, the fire has grown and now threatens communities, private timberlands, cultural resources and wilderness areas,” Cal Fire said.

The UC Davis team deployed to the blaze is Capt. Kyle Dubs; Firefighters Chad Cunningham, Gerrit Dykzeul and Meggie Elledge. Capt. Steve Dunn is deployed as the strike team leader.
