Campus soars into cultural weeks

Diversity, Mother Earth and UC Davis and its staff are the focus of a number of campus celebrations scheduled during the next two months.

The calendar lists these cultural celebrations: Soaring to New Heights, Native American Culture Days, Asian Pacific Culture Week, Black Family Week and La Raza Cultural Days. Also planned is the annual Danzantes del Alma de UC Davis folklorico dance show.

The schedule also includes Disability Pride Week and Intersex Awareness Week, as well as the Whole Earth Festival.

And don't forget the university's annual Picnic Day and TGFS, or Thank Goodness for Staff.

The program includes display tables, multicultural music and an international buffet. Organizers said the program will feature the presentation of the annual Diversity and Principles of Community Achievement Recognition Awards, and Disability Pride Awards.

Eklectica, described as an "internationally flavored acoustic string band," is scheduled to perform. The band emphasizes music from Brazil and Portugal, including samba, bossa nova, choro and fado.

Tickets are $4 each and must be purchased by Tuesday; no tickets will be sold at the door. The Soaring to New Heights Web site, poccr.ucdavis.edu/soaring, includes a list of people to contact for tickets.
