Engineering students practice assembling their entry for this year's national "Steel Bridge" competition, sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Institute of Steel Construction. Student teams have to design and fabricate a scaled-down steel bridge that best meets a variety of scoring categories, including speed of assembly, aesthetics, weight and structural efficiency. The team took first place at the regional competition this month at Sac State, qualifying for the May 29-30 national finals in Orlando, Fla. "It's up to the students completely, so if they don't have the drive and enthusiasm we won't have a great bridge," says Bill Sluis, staff adviser to the team. Last year, the team placed fifth at the nationals. This year's bridge is very good and I expect a top-three finish," Sluis says.
