Bruce Babbitt to speak on campus

Former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt brings his vision for preserving America's natural landscapes to UC Davis on Nov. 11, in an event sponsored by the John Muir Institute of the Environment.

Babbitt's term in the Clinton administration produced many celebrated environmental milestones, including the return of wolves to Yellowstone National Park and the creation of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Now he is calling for a new national land-use policy, saying that individual conservation victories alone will not be enough to protect America's open spaces from disappearing. Babbitt also served as Arizona governor from 1978 to 1987. He was a candidate for the Democratic party nomination for President in 1988.

He will speak at 10 a.m. at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center on the Davis campus. The event is open to the public and free. After his remarks, Babbitt will sign copies of his new book, Cities in the Wilderness, which will be for sale in the Alumni Center Lobby.
