ARC trial memberships

The week of April 3 is "Try Before You Buy Week" at the ARC. Faculty and staff who do not currently have a membership can obtain a complimentary trial membership and try out all the ARC has to offer. This includes access to all classes and informal recreation facilities at the ARC, and lap swimming at Hickey Pool. Faculty and staff who already have memberships can also sample all fitness classes and use Hickey Pool during this week. If you like what you try, obtain a regular membership and take advantage of early registration for all fitness classes. Early registration is until April 9, and late registration begins April 10. Check in for ARC memberships and all classes at the information desk, or for more information, visit their site at http://arc.ucdavis.edu.

Staff scholarships

Apply now for Staff Scholarships and Citations of Excellence. Applications are available on the Staff Assembly Web site at staff.ucdavis.edu or call 752-0988. Staff Scholarship applications are due no later than Friday, April 14 by 5 p.m. to Human Resources. Citation of Excellence applications are due no later than Monday, April 24 by 5 p.m. to Human Resources.

Recipients will be announced at the TGFS Picnic Day on May 10.

Gender equity conference

On May 16-17, the UC San Francisco Center for Gender Equity will host "Women Leaders 2006: A Symposium for Women in University Settings," featuring some of the most highly respected and dynamic women leaders in their respective fields. James Meyer Award

The Academic Federation invites nominations for the James H. Meyer Distinguished Achievement Award. This award will be presented in the fall and carries a stipend of $1,000. All members of the university community — Academic Federation, Academic Senate, students and staff — are invited to nominate a member of the Academic Federation for this award. The award is based on a distinguished career in research, teaching and/or public service.

Transgender forum

Campus community members are invited to an April 11 seminar on "Feminist Theory and Research." Sponsored by the Women and Gender Studies center, the program includes screening Victor Silverman and Susan Stryker's documentary Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria. The film depicts a riot between police and drag queens in San Francisco in 1966. A reception starts at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and the film at 7 p.m. A roundtable discussion ensues at 8 p.m. The location is the ARC Ballroom A.

New UCOP office delayed

The UC Office of the President has announced that it will undergo a comprehensive organizational review and has postponed its consolidation initiative and the planned lease of 190,000 square feet of office space proposed at 1100 Broadway in downtown Oakland. UC President Robert Dynes, in consultation with the UC Board of Regents, is looking at the future organizational structure of UCOP. 'Minds,' symphony receive Telly awards

University of California Television has received six Telly Awards, an international competition honoring outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs.

The winning programs demonstrate the diversity of content and production capacity throughout the UC system, with recognition in the entertainment, education, documentary, and special effects categories for programs from UC Davis, Santa Cruz and San Diego, among others.

In the education category, a Silver Telly was awarded to UCTV's magazine program "State of Minds: Spring 2005," shot around the UC Davis campus and featuring a segment about UC Davis student firefighters by broadcast specialist Paul Pfotenhauer and videographer Ken Zukin. A second silver award, this one in the entertainment category, was awarded to the UC Davis-produced "Mahler: Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection)," a concert featuring the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, University Chorus and Alumni Chorus held last year at the campus' Mondavi Center.
