Noon brown bags on keywords, herbal spas

Staff Development and Professional Services offers the following Career Catalyst brown bag sessions:

  • March 9: The Herbal Home Spa. Learn how simple it is to make your own high quality body care spa products. Using flowers, herbs, and all natural ingredients, these healthy, aromatic and beautifying skin remedies can be used to promote deep relaxation and increased vitality. The session starts at noon at the Cabernet Room/North Silo. The instructor is Kami McBride.
  • March 16: Keyword Madness. Keywords, buzz words, jargon….Do not forget to include them in your resumes, cover letters, applications and more when you are networking. This workshop will help demystify keyword madness, learn how to identify them and how to use them for professional development. The session begins at noon in the TB 121 Classroom Trailer. The instructor is Constance Stevens.

Research integrity seminar scheduled

Edward Gabriele will talk on campus March 3 about research integrity. His presentation, titled "The Spirit and Challenge of Research Ethics," is the keynote event of the Responsible Conduct of Research Program held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the AGR Room of the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.

Gabriele will describe the challenges and present ideas for promoting excellence in research and scholarship, establishing a culture of the highest standard of integrity, and addressing bioethical issues surrounding stem cell research. He is a member of the distinguished faculty of the Society of Research Administrators International.

Gabriele presently serves as director of the Office of Research Integrity for MedStar Research Institute in Hyattsville, Md. He leads the policy, oversight, regulatory compliance administration and ethics education for research involving use of human subjects and tissues conducted under the MedStar Health System at hospitals in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas.

'Death of a Salesman' opens at Main Theatre

Willy Loman is coming to the Main Theatre stage, the Theatre and Dance Department announced. Loman is the title character in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, about the failure of the American dream, scheduled to open at UC Davis next week. A preview performance is set for 8 p.m. Thursday and opening night is March 3. Curtain time is 8 p.m. March 3 and 4, and March 9-11, and 2 p.m. March 5 and 12. Another matinee is set for 1 p.m. March 10, and afterward Nicholson is due to take part in a discussion in the theatre. Staff assistance and support programs offered

Four support groups organized by the Academic and Staff Assistance Program are scheduled to begin in mid-March, and interested participants are advised to arrange screening appointments to prepare for enrollment. The groups will meet for eight weeks:

  • Caregiver Support — For caregivers of dependent adults, giving the caregivers an opportunity to talk openly about their struggles, learn coping strategies and more. Facilitators are Beth Cohen and Vanessa James. Mondays, March 13-May 1, noon-1 p.m.
  • The Art of Imperfection — Maintaining a Mind Set of Excellence. Exploring perfectionist behaviors and how they can influence life, your relationships with others, and more. Facilitators are Alice Provost and Nancy Hodges. Tuesdays, March 14-May 2, noon-1 p.m.
  • Retirement Preparation: Who Will I Be When I No Longer Work at UC Davis? — Considering the nonfinancial aspects of retirement for those considering retirement within the next five years. Facilitators are Sally Harvey and Carol Nickles. Wednesdays, March 15-May 3, 10-11 a.m.
  • Living in Two Cultures — Discovering the strengths that can come from a bicultural life in family, workplace and community settings. Facilitator is Terri Hiroshima-Chan. Thursdays, March 16-May 4, noon-1 p.m.
