Medical center opens new fitness facility

The UC Davis Medical Center will open a new fitness facility to serve its student population, presently scheduled to open on Nov. 5. Students will now have the ability to enjoy a modern and convenient facility without having to leave the UC Davis-Sacramento campus.

The fitness facility, located at the corner of Stockton and Y streets in Sacramento, will feature a selection of more than 15 different pieces of cardio equipment including treadmills, elliptical trainers, and stair machines, as well as stationary bikes. The facility will also provide free weights, a stretching area, and weight machines. The building will feature men's and women's locker rooms, showers, towel service and lounge space.

Faculty: Improve use of images in class

Do you teach with images? If so, consider attending an Oct. 24 demonstration on ARTStor, a digital library. The session runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will be held in the Intruction Room on the second floor of Shields Library.

ARTstor is a digital library that contains more than 500,000 images specifically to support teaching and learning. During the 90-minute demonstration, representatives from ARTstor and the California Digital Library will highlight how ARTstor's images, tools and services can help meet curricular needs. Advancement Services and Foundation Accounting

Advancement Services and Foundation Accounting has relocated to a new location — 1460 Drew Avenue, suite 100. These are two units under the Finance, Inform-ation Management and Administrative Services unit of University Relations.

Advancment Services includes the services in gift acceptance and policy, application programming, Web, business and database services, the University Relations Helpdesk and network operations. The new location includes a eight person training room for the alumni donor management system database. The new number for the Helpdesk is (530) 754-1106

Winter gardening talk

Wondering what to do with your empty plot after the summer vegetables are finished? October is an ideal time to start a winter garden. A workshop on this subject will be held at noon on Oct. 25 in the Silo's Cabernet Room. This session will provide attendees with information on which plants to grow and how to plant, mulch and tend to a winter garden.

First senate meeting of year

The Academic Senate's Representative Assembly is scheduled to meet from 2:10 to 4 p.m. Oct. 23 in MU II at the Memorial Union.

The agenda for the first meeting of the new academic year includes the presentation of annual reports from senate committees.

James Hodgson, chair of the Graduate Student Association, is scheduled to address the senate at 3:15 p.m. Under unfinished business, the senate is due to take up proposed changes to the dissertation and final oral examination requirements for doctoral degrees. The senate also is expected to take up bylaw and regulation revisions for the School of Medicine, and the colleges of Biological Sciences, and Letters and Science.

Staff Assembly's fall gathering

Staff Assembly is preparing to celebrate its first round of scholarships for staff dependents. The recipients are due to be introduced at the assembly's Fall Meeting, scheduled from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 24 in MU II at the Memorial Union.

The assembly has long given out scholarships to staff members, but never to dependents. The new scholarships are limited to dependents who are enrolled at UC Davis.

Money for the new scholarships comes from fundraising efforts associated with the annual Thank Goodness for Staff celebration. This money formerly went to staff scholarships, but that fund is now surviving on interest payments or about $4,000 a year. Therefore, Staff Assembly decided to start a new fund for dependent scholarships.

The Staff Assembly meeting agenda also includes a talk by Karen Hull, interim associate vice chancellor for Human Resources. Staff Assembly announced that light refreshments will be served during the meeting, and prizes will be raffled.

Emeriti, retirees joint meeting

The UC Davis Emeriti and Retirees associations plan a joint session for their Fall Meeting. It is scheduled for Oct. 22 in Ballrooms A and B at the ARC, with parking available in Lot 25.

Social time and refreshments are planned from 2 to 2:30 p.m. A program on health and retirement benefits is scheduled from 2:30 to 4 p.m., with presenters from the UC Office of the President. Members are invited to take a tour of the new Aggie Stadium starting at 4:30 p.m.

On Oct. 25, UC Davis is hosting the Council of UC Emeriti Associations and the Council of UC Retirees Associations for daylong meetings at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.

Fall commencement regalia

The Materiel Management unit and the bookstore are taking orders from faculty who wish to borrow or rent caps, gowns, tassels and hoods for fall commencement.

Materiel Management provides caps, gowns, tassels and UC doctoral hoods at no charge. Items can be picked up from the Central Storehouse, or for a nominal fee storehouse personnel will deliver. For paper versions of the order form, or to arrange regalia delivery, or for other inquiries, call Terry Chase, (530) 752-9184. Orders are due by Nov. 9.

The bookstore handles rentals of non-UC hoods, and UC hoods for all degrees other than doctorates. The fee is $20 for orders placed by Oct. 31, with $10 added for rush orders after that date. Police Day on the Quad

The UC Davis Police Department plans to get in on the Frisbee fun on the Quad on Oct. 22, with officers giving away 500 Frisbees as a way to remind of the dangers of drug use. The giveaway is planned during the second annual UC Davis Police Day on the Quad, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lt. Nader Oweis said investigators and patrol, motorcycle and bicycle officers will be on hand to talk about what they do, and about police services, including crime prevention and lost and found. Also participating: Cal Aggie Hosts and the Campus Violence Prevention Program.

Oweis said officers plan to conduct field sobriety tests on volunteers outfitted with "beer goggles," which impair vision and contribute to balance problems as if the goggle wearers had been drinking alcohol.

Faculty Research Lecturer Award

All Academic Senate members are invited to submit nominations for this year's Faculty Research Lecturer Award. The Faculty Research Lecturer is the highest honor the Davis Division of the Academic Senate accords its members.
