Aggies on the Move

More than 600 people are registered in Aggies On the Move, the new walking program for the university community. "Everywhere we go people are flashing their pedometers at us! It's very exciting to see so many enthusiastic walkers," the program's e-mail newsletter declares.

The newsletter announced that Aggies On the Move participants can get a $2 discount on Turkey Trot registrations submitted by Nov. 13. The annual Turkey Trot is scheduled for Nov. 18 at Civic Center Field, B Street between Fifth and Seventh streets, behind City Hall.

The event comprises a five-kilometer run-walk at 8:20 a.m., a 10K at 9 a.m., a baby jogger 5K at 8 a.m., and children's half-mile and quarter-mile events starting at 10:30 a.m. Special registration forms for Aggies On the Move members are available in person and by e-mail from the Wellness Center at the Activities and Recreation Center.

The Wellness Center also is the place to go to register for Aggies On the Move. For $5, registrants get a kit that includes a pedometer and a logbook valued at $15. Check for availability by contacting the Wellness Center at (530) 754-2179 or wellnesscenter@ucdavis.edu.

Seventh vanpool

UC Davis' main campus now has seven vanpools up and running. The newest van went into service Nov. 1, with pickups in Lodi and Elk Grove. Ann Davies-Nesbitt, the campus's alternative transportation program manager, said the new vanpool's founding members all are part of Student Housing's custodial staff.

The van started up with five riders; one more and they all will ride for free the first month, thanks to subsidies from the Sacramento Area Council of Governments, Yolo Transportartion Management Agency, Solano-Napa Commuter Information, Commute Connection and Enterprise Rideshare.

To sign up for the van, contact Davies-Nesbitt, (530) 752-6453 or amdaviesnesbitt@ucdavis.edu.

New tech Web site

If you have not visited the main campus tech Web site lately, you might take a look. It has just been overhauled, and the people behind it are eager to hear what instructors, staff and students think about the change. The reborn site is iet.ucdavis.edu, the online home of Information and Educational Technology. It now offers an improved display that is consistent, easier to use, and searchable across all of IET's services.

"We're trying to organize it the way our customers want to find things, not around how IET is organized," said IET Vice Provost Pete Siegel. Send comments to ietweb@ucdavis.edu.

Repro Graphics, IET

Phone numbers have changed at 3820 Chiles Road, the campus outpost in southeast Davis that's home to Repro Graphics and two units of Information and Educational Technology. Repro Graphics reprographics.ucdavis.edu, a document services unit, will switched to new numbers on Nov. 2, followed by most of the Chiles IET staff next week.

The new main number for Repro Graphics is 752-0867 or 752-COPY (2679). The new fax is 754-0202.

(An IET group working on the Banner http://sis.ucdavis.edu project won't switch until Dec. 15.) For the next six months, anyone calling an expired number will hear a recording that lists the new numbers. The IET units at 3820 Chiles include the vice provost's office and Application Development (see iet.ucdavis.edu). The switchover allows upgraded service and reduces fees paid to third-party providers. Communications Resources recently established a dedicated fiber-optic cable connection between the Chiles building and the main campus voice and data network systems, making the change possible.

Student site upgrades

The software program that manages data in the Student Information System — known as "Banner" — is being upgraded over Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 11-12. The Banner system will be unavailable from 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 through 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13. The Student Information on the Web site, or SISWEB, will be down during the upgrade. However, faculty will be able to use the course management tools in SmartSite and MyUCDavis.

Other UC Davis online applications may be affected during the upgrade weekend. After the upgrade, Banner users will access the Banner Student Information System from the Internet at sis.ucdavis.edu. To learn more about the upgrade, visit the Banner Web site at sis.ucdavis.edu/banner.
