In brief: student leadership awards, Dynes on campus, 'soaring' awards, emeritis and retirees

Student leadership awards

Students, faculty and staff at UC Davis are invited to nominate candidates for the annual Mary Jeanne Gilhooly, Veloyce Glenn Winslow, Jr. and Margarita Robinson Student Leadership Awards. These awards publicly recognize the outstanding senior woman, the outstanding senior man and outstanding juniors.

The recipients will be announced at the end of May, and honored May 27. Nomination forms are available at the MU Information Desk; Student Programs and Activities Center, 457 MU; Student Affairs, 476 Mrak Hall; and at studentawards.ucdavis.edu. Nominations are due to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, 476 Mrak Hall, by 5 p.m. Feb. 6.

Dynes to meet with faculty

Academic Senate Chair Linda Bisson is inviting senate and Academic Federation members to a Jan. 31 forum with UC President Robert Dynes on the subject of "The Power and Promise of 10," his vision for systemwide coordination of UC endeavors, with "10" referring to the number of UC campuses. The forum is scheduled from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in MU II at Memorial Union.

'Soaring' awards

Nominations are being sought for several awards to be presented during the campus's annual Soaring to New Heights celebration.

Most of the awards recognize efforts in support of diversity and the Principles of Community. Another award, named after Police Chief Emeritus Calvin E. Handy, recognizes contributions to public safety and security on the main campus or in the medical center community.

The Diversity and Principles of Community Achievement Awards comprise awards for individuals, and-or awards for department, teams and units. Among the individual awards is the Deanna Falge Award, recognizing ongoing efforts (five years or more) toward the furthering of UC Davis' affirmative action-equal opportunity or diversity objectives.

The awards are for staff on the Davis campus and at the UC Davis Health System. Faculty, executives, student employees and community members will be considered for special citations.

The nomination deadlines are Feb. 14 for the Diversity and Principles of Community Achievement Awards, and Feb. 28 for the Handy award. All nominations should be directed to Phyllis Thomas in the Office of Campus Community Relations; her e-mail address is pmthomas@ucdavis.edu.

The 15th annual Soaring to New Heights program, including a luncheon open to the campus community, is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 8 at Freeborn Hall. Ticket information — where to get them and the price — will be posted soon at occr.ucdavis.edu/soaring.

Emeriti-Retirees meeting

The UC Davis Emeriti and Retirees association have scheduled a joint meeting the afternoon of Feb. 4 to hear about the university's plans for the centennial celebration in 2008-09

The featured speaker is listed as Assistant Vice Chancellor Bob Segar, head of the centennial celebration team.

Segar's regular job is lead campus planner, and in that role, he intends to talk to the emeriti and retirees about the future look of the campus. His presentation is expected to include a video titled Building a Connected Campus, which the UC Board of Regents saw during their November meeting at UC Davis.

The emeriti-retirees gathering is set to begin with refreshments at 2 p.m., followed by the meeting from 2:30 to 4 in Ballroom A at the Activities and Recreation Center. Afterward, from 4:30 to 5:30, the emeriti and retirees are invited to join a tour of the recently completed Veterinary Medicine 3A building.
