Senate teaching awards

The Academic Senate is accepting nominations for the senate's 2007-08 distinguished teaching awards, to be given in two categories: undergraduate teaching, and graduate and professional teaching.

Nominations are sought from anyone in the academic community: students, faculty, staff, alumni, departments or units; successful nominations typically provide the perspective of both students and faculty, according to a campus memo from the senate.

Citizens Academy offered

The UC Davis Police Department is taking applications for its winter quarter Citizens Academy, a free, nine-week program about the relationship between the department and the community, and about law enforcement tactics.

The academy is open to students, faculty, staff and anyone else in the community; UC Davis students can receive credit for full attendance.

Lt. Nader Oweis, police spokesman, said there are no prerequisites for enrollment. However, he said, the Police Department runs background checks on applicants, and reserves the right to turn anyone away.

The academy is scheduled to meet from 3 to 5 p.m. on consecutive Wednesdays from Jan. 16 to March 12 at police headquarters on Kleiber Hall Drive.

The academy is offered every winter and spring quarter. Topics: community oriented policing; arrest, search and seizure; defensive tactics; lethal weapons; high-speed chases; high-risk stops; and shoot-or-don't shoot scenarios; plus the police-community relationship.

Staff Assembly scholarships

Applications for Staff Assembly's next round of scholarships — for staff and their family members — are due to be available in January. Alyssa Varela, Staff Assembly coordinator, gave this timetable:

• Staff scholarships — Applications available Jan. 7, due by Feb. 4.
• Staff dependent scholarships — Applications Jan. 21, due by Feb. 18.

Varela said the applications will be available online, staff.ucdavis.edu. Applications will be due by 5 p.m. on the deadline day, to the Staff Assembly office in the Human Resources Administration Building (Orchard Road just west of La Rue Road).

Management program

The application period is open for UC's Management Skills Assessment Program, designed to help participants make prudent career decisions and identify areas for skill development.

MSAP participants will be given the opportunity to demonstrate and evaluate their management skills, according to a campus memo. University managers offer feedback, the memo states.

The program is scheduled from April 28 to May 2 at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove. The departmental cost is $850 plus transportation expenses.

Plan ahead for baseball

Here is an idea for holiday gift giving: Tickets to UC Davis Day at the Oakland Athletics-San Francisco Giants baseball game June 29. The game is set for 1:05 p.m. in Oakland.

Staff Assembly is selling tickets for $30, including fees and taxes, a savings of more than $6. Not only that, but Staff Assembly plans to give prizes to people in the UC Davis section throughout the game.

Get fit in the New Year

Faculty, staff and students can get a jump on their New Year's resolutions during Campus Recreation's quarterly "Try Before You Buy" period, from Jan. 2 to Jan. 12. During this period, faculty, staff and students may enjoy free access to all the equipment and resources at the Activities and Recreation Center at the corner of La Rue and Orchard Road.
