Recyclemania 2010

Three weeks remain in Recyclemania 2010, a national competition to be the top college campus in recycling rates.

UC Davis’ R4 program encourages all students, staff and faculty to participate by recycling as much paper, plastic, metals and cardboard as possible. The last day of the contest is March 27.

Recyclemania also highlights UC Davis’ goal of becoming a “zero waste” campus. “R4’s main goal is to get people aware of Recyclemania as well as the various recycling and sustainability programs that UC Davis has in place,” said Maddison Greaves, a student coordinator with R4.

Soaring to New Heights

Tickets went are on sale for the campus’s annual celebration of diversity, Soaring to New Heights, scheduled for April 13. The venue is Freeborn Hall, with an information fair starting at 11:15 a.m., and an international buffet lunch being served from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.

The program, sponsored by the Office of Campus Community Relations, also includes the presentation of diversity awards and the Calvin E. Handy Leadership Award.

Only 600 tickets will be sold, and they must be purchased in advance. They are available through the Freeborn Hall ticket office on a first-come, first-served basis, through March 31, or until sold out. Tickets may be purchased in person or by phone, at (530) 752-1915; a $5 handling charge is assessed per phone order (whether you order one or more tickets, only one $5 handling charge is assessed).

Cash, checks payable to UC Regents and personal credit cards are accepted forms of payments. Departmental recharges are allowable; DaFIS account managers may send requests by e-mail, to occr@ucdavis.edu (include account number and number of tickets to be charged). Only requests from account managers will be accepted.

A campus directive states: "Department-unit representation at these events is highly recommended. Release time with supervisory approval is appropriate."

Too few U-DASH riders

Low ridership has done in the U-DASH lunchtime shuttle between UC Davis and downtown Davis. Unitrans announced that the last of service will be March 15, coinciding with the end of winter quarter instruction.

The Davis Downtown Business Association, the city of Davis and Unitrans have been partners in U-DASH, with additional funds from the Yolo Solano Air Quality Management District.

A planning survey suggested U-DASH would draw 200 boardings a day. However, fall quarter ridership averaged about 12 boardings a day. For winter quarter, the sponsors eliminated the fare and extended the route to the Health Sciences District, but daily ridership increased to only about 40 boardings, half of those for trips between points on campus.
