IN BRIEF: Nominations due for Business Officer Institute; Another phishing scam

NOMINATIONS DUE FOR BUSINESS OFFICER INSTITUTE: UC Davis nominations are due by Sept. 15 for the UC system's next Business Officer Institute, Oct. 20-23 in Burlingame, on the San Francisco Peninsula.

The program is designed for business officers with broad decision-making and-or supervisory responsibility for budget, finance, human resources, information technology, internal controls or spobnsored projects, in academic or administrative units.

Nominations should be directed to Chuck Yannacone of Staff Development & Professional Services, via e-mail at cgyannacone@ucdavis.edu. Include name, title, title code, department, e-mail address and telephone number for the nominee and his or her supervisor, the nominator; and rationale for the nomination.

The Office of the President covers the cost of the institute, including private room and most meals. Departments are expected to cover the cost of travel, incidentals and two evening meals.

To help defray travel costs, sessions are offered twice a year alternately in northern and southern California.

ANOTHER PHISHING SCAM: The latest phishing scam sent to UC Davis e-mail accounts surfaced Aug. 16. The return address has already been blocked, but Information and Educational Technology is publicizing the message in case it resurfaces with a different return address.

This fraud is at least the seventh since spring to target campus e-mail accounts. Like others of its kind, it asks the recipient to disclose his or her account password -- information the campus never asks anyone to send by e-mail.

Read more about how to avoid e-mail scams, and if you have any questions contact the IT Express computing services help desk at (530) 754-HELP (4357) or ithelp@ucdavis.edu.

The latest counterfeit starts with "Dear Webmail Subscriber" and reads, in part: "This mail is to inform all our webmail users that we will be maintaining and upgrading our website in a couple of days from now. As a Subscriber you are required to send us your Email account details to enable us know if you are still making use of your mail box. Be informed that we will be deleting all mail account that is not functioning to enable us create more space for students and staffs."

The frauduent e-mail also states: "WARNING: Any of you that receive this email and failed to respond to the mail will be deactivated immediately from our database."
