IN BRIEF: Managers, zero waste, writing, committees

Mid-managers conference

Administrative staff and managers are invited to attend the annual ADMAN Mid-Management Conference Committee for 2009.

“ADMAN” stands for Administrative Management Group. This year’s theme is, “Doing What You Really Love for a Living.” Registration is open until Feb. 20. To sign up, go online at adman.ucdavis.edu. The registration fee is $90 per person.

Organizers say the conference will address current topics of interest to campus managers, find ways to improve and simplify business operations at all levels, promote professional growth of all department and unit administrators and managers, and encourage work-life enrichment through training.

Zero waste conference

To help the campus community shift to a zero waste strategy, Campus Events and Visitor Services is hosting its 12th annual Caterer and Vendor Showcase on Feb. 18. The event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the ARC Pavilion. It is free, and those interested in attending are asked to preregister online at conferences.ucdavis.edu/epe09.

“The purpose is to give staff, faculty, and students a chance to meet providers and sample their wares,” said CEVS event coordinator Aaron Sikes.

Healing process of writing

The UC Davis Cancer Center is offering a free course beginning this month for cancer patients and their friends, family members, caregivers and health care providers.

The course, Writing as Healing, supports the healing process through creative writing in an inspirational and fun environment. The class began Feb. 4 and runs through Oct. 29. (Participants may join the group on any Wednesday.)

To register, call (916) 734-0823.

Advisory committees

UC Davis is seeking applications for membership on administrative advisory committees for 2009-10.

“I encourage you to become involved in issues affecting the UC Davis community,” Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef said. “As expressed in our Principles of Community, we wish to receive applications from persons representing the broad range of diversity.”

The committees address topics such as arts, athletics, child care, student services and research, and provide an opportunity for all constituencies — Academic Senate and Academic Federation members, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students — to participate in campus governance.

The application form and more information, including a list of the committees with brief descriptions, are available online at chancellor.ucdavis.edu/aac. Applications are requested by March 9.
