Library invites staff to summer classes

The University Library announced summer classes for staff, offering information on how to use print materials and electronic resources, from office and home. The program also includes instruction in searching the library's catalog and databases.

All classes are scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Shields Library Instruction Lab, Room 165.

The first class is set for June 29, with repeat classes on July 23, and Aug. 5 and 10. Registration is required: lib.ucdavis.edu/classes. For more information, contact Sandra Vella, savella@lib.ucdavis.edu.

More fire training planned

The UC Davis Fire Department plans to burn another old house on university property west of Highway 113. The training target this time is the abandoned Baxter house, which most recently housed an avian lab research facility.

Earlier this year the department set fire to a house opposite the campus landfill along County Road 98.

The Baxter house is on Bee Biology Road near the north end of University Airport. The training exercise is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. June 30.

“I’ll be glad to see it go,” entomology professor Lynn Kimsey said of the Baxter house, which is on the grounds of the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility.

Kimsey is interim chair of the entomology department, which plans to develop a half-acre Haagen-Dazs Honey Bee Haven at the research facility this year.
