IN BRIEF

Parking permit renewals under way

Transportation and Parking Services, or TAPS, announced that 2010-11 parking fees on the Davis campus will be the same as this year’s.

All 2009-10 permits are due to expire June 30, and the renewal process is now under way. For staff and faculty who use payroll deduction to pay for parking, TAPS offers an online system for quick and easy renewals (for the same type of permit or for a different type of permit). You can also use the online system to cancel your permit and payroll deduction.

In e-mails to permit holders, TAPS asked them to take care of their renewals by June 10. Letters went out to people without e-mail addresses or Kerberos ID.

Anyone wishing to renew, change or cancel their permits after June 10 must submit their request in person or by mail; the downside to waiting until June 10 or later is that you may not receive your permit by July 1, and your corresponding payroll deduction (or cancellation of your payroll deduction) may not take effect by July 1.

For more information on renewals after June 10, call TAPS, (530) 752-8277, or visit the TAPS office, just north of the west entry garage off Hutchison Drive. Office hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Computing Services Conference

UC Davis information technology experts are contributing two presentations to the 2010 UC Computing Services Conference, scheduled July 19-20 in a hybrid live (at UCLA) and virtual format — in keeping with the conference theme: “No Limits! UCCSC Goes Green and Saves Green!”

Registration is free and can be arranged online; the deadline is June 14.

The live conference is taking place at UCLA. But, organizers said, “because people can attend from anywhere, we hope to be able to include people who have no travel budgets, people who are only interested in one or two presentations, and people who can’t get away for a full conference.”

Participants each year typically include technical support staff, system administrators, directors, managers, librarians and information security experts — giving them an opportunity to discuss common IT issues and learn about one another’s projects.

The 2010 program includes more than two dozen presentations, on topics ranging from cloud computing to designing custom applications for multicampus use.

The UC Davis presentations:

Centralized Windows Services @ UC Davis — About Xeda, created to enhance campus support for the Microsoft Windows platform. Luis Molina, programmer, and Paul Singh, programmer-supervisor, Data Center and Client Services, Information and Educational Technology.

Developing, Charging for and Subsidizing a Central Virtualization Service — Presentation by Dave Zavatson, manager, Data Center and Client Services.

The conference program also includes the announcement of the receipients of the 2010 Larry L. Sautter Awards, recognizing IT innovations in the UC system. Last year the UC Davis Health System won a golden Sautter award for the Computerized Provider Order Entry project, a key phase of the health system’s transition from paper to electronic medical records.

New Retirees Reception

New retirees — anyone who retired or who plans to retire during the 2009-10 academic year — are invited to the New Retirees Reception on June 17.

The reception is held annually for staff and faculty alike from the Davis and Sacramento campuses.

The 2010 reception is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rec Pool Lodge, off Hutchison Drive at La Rue Road.

Organizers with the Retiree Center said Enrique Lavernia, provost and executive vice chancellor, and Edward Callahan, associate dean for Academic Personnel in the UC Davis Health System, will be on hand to offer their congratulations to the new retirees.

In addition, representatives from the Retiree Center, Emeriti Association and Retirees Association will share information about their programs.

Invitations to the reception have been mailed to faculty and staff who retired prior to April 15; if you retired April 15 or later, look for the invitation in your retirement packet. If you feel that you should have received an invitation and did not, contact the Retiree Center, (530) 752-5182 or retireecenter.ucdavis.edu.

People planning to attend are asked to register online.
