Shields reopens after precautionary evacuation

Shields Library was open as usual today (May 14) after an evacuation the night before, the result of a suspicious box in front of the library. The Yolo County Bomb Squad used a robot to identify what was in the box: 40 cans of energy drink.

A piece of paper attached to the box read "Test Answers," according to Lt. Matt Carmichael of the campus Police Department, which is continuing its investigation.

Campus police said an unidentified male left the box outside the library's main entrance at about 9 p.m. Shortly thereafter, police evacuated the building — about 200 students were inside at the time.

Authorities cordoned off the area and the Fire Department stood by. The bomb squad completed its work by about 11:30.

Emeriti Association's Spring Meeting

The Emeriti Association's Spring Meeting is scheduled for May 20, with a program titled "Campus History via Campus Emeriti."

The meeting is set to take place at International House, 10 College Park, Davis, starting at 2 p.m. with mix and migle, followed by the program from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

SDPS survey still open

Staff Development and Professional Services has extended the deadline for an online survey on SDPS services.

"The results of this brief anonymous survey will influence the programs and services we develop and implement in the coming year," said Carina Celesia Moore, director of Staff Development and Professional Services.

"The more responses we receive, the better we can meet the training and development needs of our campus community."

People are asked to complete the survey by May 28.

Aggie Express Coaches Tour

Aggie coaches are going on the road — not for a game, but to promote Aggie athletics, including the upcoming football season, which the Aggies’ first varsity game against Cal in 71 years.

The Aggie Express Coaches Tour, presented by the Cal Aggie Alumni Association and UC Davis Athletics, is billed as an opportunity to rally with fellow Aggie alumni and find out more about the exciting upcoming season.

The UC Davis-Cal football game is set for Sept. 4 at Cal’s Memorial Stadium. Tickets to this game will be available for purchase during the Aggie Express Coaches Tour, organizers said.

The tour date is May 19, the destination is the Pyramid Alehouse, 1410 Locust St., Walnut Creek, and the hours are 6 to 8 p.m.

Organizers said the following head coaches are due to be on the tour: Bob Biggs, football; Jamie Holmes, volleyball; Sandy Simpson, women’s basketball; and Gary Stewart, men’s basketball.

The cost is $10 for Cal Aggie Alumni Association, TeamAGGIE and parent association members, or $15 for nonmembers. The price includes appetizers; beverages are no-host.
