MAY 18

• Today and Tomorrow's Women of Success — Professional development event for undergraduate women with questions and concerns about their career goals and who would like to engage in a discussion with UC Davis graduates and women in various professions. Noon-2 p.m., Moss Room, memorial Union.

• Black Faculty and Staff Luncheon — In appreciation of faculty and staff efforts on behalf of students. Includes awards ceremony for outstanding faculty and staff. Noon, King Lounge, MU. (Reservations required.)

• Black Male Appreciation — A dinner and awards, honoring black men for their contributions to the campus. 7 p.m., Technoculutral Studies Building (formerly the Art Annex).

MAY 19

• Spreading the Word, Part 1 — A two-part program on the hip-hop culture of the United States and Ghana. Part 1 comprises a documentary film, HomeGrown: HipLife in Ghana, followed by a question-and-answer session with the filmmaker, Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi, and a lecture by Halifu Osumare, associate professor: “Hip-Life Culture: The Indigenization of Hip-Hop Culture in Ghana.” 7 p.m., 2 Wellman Hall. Part 2 is a performance by Blitz the Ambassador (see May 22 listing).

MAY 20

• Taste of Nigeria — A program on the culture of food in Nigeria — with tastings! Sponsored by the Nigerian Student Association, which states: “What we consume, how we acquire it, who prepares it, who’s at the table, and who eats first is a form of communication that is rich with meaning. The association would like to share this meaning and spread the culture. 7 p.m., 216 Wellman Hall.

MAY 21

• Black Youth Leadership Conference — For high school students, giving them the opportunity to interact with the African Diaspora community at UC Davis through holistic workshops, entertainment and gatherings. 9 a.m.-3 p.m., various locations.

• Apollo Night — Student talent show, featuring stand-up comedy, dancing, singing, music, spoken word and more. The winner receives $100 and the chance to perform at Sophia’s Thai Kitchen on May 26. Talent show sign-ups are being taken at the Cross Cultural Center. Apollo Night admission: $2 at the door. 7 p.m., 100 Hunt Hall.

MAY 22

• Black Family Day — With rapper Blitz the Ambassador as the headline entertainer. Blitz is Samuel Baza Awuley, born in Ghana and now based in New York, with one album to his credit: Stereotype. His performance is set for 3 p.m., with his band, The Park. The Black Family Day program also includes a children’s fair and a health fair, food, and Wine and Jazz Social (21 and older). Noon-6 p.m., Quad and Memorial Union.

All events are open to the public; admission is free to all but Apollo Night.
