Bike to Work Breakfast May 20

Bicycling to and from work is good for your health and the environment. And, once a year, your bike commute brings one other benefit: free breakfast.

It is offered on Bike to Work Day, being celebrated this year on May 20 in Davis. Breakfast is scheduled from 7 to 9 a.m. at Central Park, Third and C streets.

“Show up on a bike, and enjoy muffins, bagels, coffee, juice and fruit,” said David Takemoto-Weerts, Bicycle Program coordinator for UC Davis’ Transportation and Parking Services, or TAPS.

TAPS, the city of Davis and the Yolo Transportation Management Association sponsor the event as a way to thank bicycle commuters and to encourage more people to consider pedaling to work.

Bike to Work Day comes amid Bike Month, which, in the greater Sacramento area, includes bicycle-themed movies in Davis, and many other events, not the least of which is the bike commute challenge.

For the challenge, people are invited to register for free and log their bicycling miles. Prizes are being awarded weekly to people chosen at random from among all the registered riders. And, at the end of the month, grand prizes will be awarded to people chosen at random from among all riders who logged their miles weekly.

Regionwide, in Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, Placer, Sutter and Yuba counties, the goal is 1 million miles for the month.

Takemoto-Weerts said sign-ups are still welcome. You can log your miles starting the day you register, and you can also go back to May 1, to log all your miles for the month for commuting and work trips within your workday, and for recreation and errands.

Besides recording your miles as an individual, you also can elect to have your miles lumped in with everyone else who works at the same place you do.

For example, as of May 14, UC employees (Davis campus) had racked up 5,748 miles, and UC Davis medical center employees had racked up 5,273.

UC Davis students can register in their own category; as of May 14, they had racked up 5,466 miles.

Bike to Work Day in Sacramento

The capital city observes Bike to Work Day on May 21, with these events:

Energizer station — 7-9 a.m., 10th Street in front of the Capitol. Free water and energy bars for cyclists on their way to work.

Capitol Bike Fest — 11 a.m.-1 p.m., west steps of the Capitol. Music, prize and awards, plus drawings for bicycles. Free bicycle safety checks. Bike valet.

The bike fest program also includes an information fair, with representatives from bike shops, bicycle groups, public transit providers, walking organizations and clean air agencies. Takemoto-Weerts said the California Bicycle Museum (a UC Davis-city of Davis partnership) will be promoting the museum and its recent selection as the new home base for the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.

Also, if you bring a printout showing that you are logging your miles during Bike to Work Month, you will receive a fruit freeze and a raffle ticket for commuter bicycles.
