Imagine, if you will, our new museum, the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. Imagine what the building will look like. Very soon, you can see how three design-build teams imagine it, and your comments are welcome.

The teams will unveil their proposals the night of Wednesday, April 3, in a program titled Imagine! — “an exciting opportunity for the campus community to imagine together and begin the process of realizing our new museum,” said Rachel Teagle the museum director.

“Community input is an important aspect of how we will select the final design,” said Teagle, noting that the selection will be announced at the end of April or in early May.

But, before then, “We need everyone to come out to hear the architects, see the models and give us your input.”

If you can’t attend that night, no worries. Detailed drawings and architectural models will go on display the next day, Thursday, April 4, at the Nelson Gallery. Design Deliberation: An Exhibition of Three Competing Museum Designs is scheduled to run through May 19.

Design Deliberation will run alongside Views on Migration, opening Thursday (March 28). See separate story.

Teagle said Nelson Gallery visitors will be provided ample opportunity to share their thoughts on the museum designs. Also, comments are welcome on this Facebook page.

The "big reveal" is the culmination of a design process that began with the 2012-13 academic year. The university issued an open call for architect-contractor teams, and Teagle and her team held a series of conversations to hear what people in the campus and community envisioned for the new museum.

Subsequently, the university selected three teams to vie in a formal design competition. The teams:

  • Kitchell, contractor; WORKac, design architect; and Westlake Reed Leskosky, executive architect
  • Oliver and Company, contractor; Henning Larsen Architects, design architect; and Gould Evans, executive architect
  • Whiting-Turner, contractor; SO-IL, design architect; and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, executive architect
