SKILLED AND SENSUAL TANGO BUENOS AIRES: A tango troupe that performed for a sold-out Mondavi Center in 2003 is scheduled to return on Nov. 7.
Tango Buenos Aires, widely praised as the world's premier touring tango company, plans a program that traces the tango's evolution from the brothel to the cabaret to the ballroom. The touring company features 10 dancers, a five-piece band, and plenty of skilled and sensual tango dancing,
The Mondavi Center show is set to begin at 8 p.m. in Jackson Hall.
NELSON GALLERY'S FRIENDS PLAN BUS TRIP TO SF SHOWS: Nelson Art Friends announced a bus trip to a pair of San Francisco galleries: the Museum of Modern Art and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
MOMA is featuring work by Olafur Eliasson, while Nov. 11 is the last day for the "Dark Matters: Artists See the Impossible" exhibit at the Yerba Buena center.
The outing is set for Nov. 11, departing at 9 a.m. from First and A streets, Davis. The cost is $50 for members of Nelson Art Friends (affiliated with the campus's Nelson Gallery) or $75 for nonmembers; MOMA members deduct $5 for museum admission. JAZZ BAND, SYMPHONY CONCERTS SCHEDULED: The new academic year's first concerts by the UC Davis Jazz Band and University Symphony Orchestra are scheduled in mid-November.
Jazz Band -- 8 p.m. Nov. 14, Studio Theatre, Mondavi Center. The program lists the Jazz Band, also known as the Wednesday Night Big Band, plus the band's Jazz Improv combo.
The Jazz Band plans a program titled "The Tradition Revisited," with arrangements of music by Herbie Hancock, George Gershwin, Manning Sherwin, Denis DiBlasio, Miles Davis and Cole Porter. The Jazz Improv combo is set to perform Kenny Baron's Voyage and Delbert Bump's Reflex.
The concert marks Bump's debut as the new director and instructor of jazz ensembles at UC Davis. He is a jazz organist and multigenre composer, as well as an instructor at Solano Community College.
Symphony -- 8 p.m. Nov. 18, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center. Beethoven: Egmont overture; Bach: Cantata 82, Ich habe genug; and Mahler: Symphony No. 1 (Titan). D. Kern Holoman, conductor.
