THE ARTS: Mondavi Center participates in Arts Day of Giving

ON STAGE: The Foreigner, Bat Boy: The Musical and Edge Performance Festival

EXHIBITIONS

The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on Monday (April 29) gives us two free programs: a lunchtime event at the Davis Commons shopping center, and a Corin Courtyard Concert in the early evening.

And we have an easy way to give back — during the Arts Day of Giving in the Sacramento region. Starting at 4:29 a.m. on April 29, the GiveLocalNow website will accept donations to 78 participating arts organizations, including the Mondavi Center.

The Day of Giving challenge, modeled after similar efforts across the country, give people 24 hours "to give where their art is." And all donations that day are eligible for a match.

In Davis, the lunchtime event, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., is a project of the Mondavi Center, YoloArts, the Davis Art Center and the Pence Gallery, and the Davis Commons (First Street and Richards Boulevard).

The program features an interactive art project hosted by the Pence Gallery, plus DJ music and speakers, including Jeremy Ganter, the Mondavi Center's associate executive director, and Davis Mayor Joe Krovoza.

And, last but not least, giveaways by Davis Commons merchants — to people who show a receipt for giving to the GiveLocalNow effort.

The Corin Courtyard Concert, at the northeast corner of the Mondavi Center, will feature Yolo Mambo, playing transglobal rhythms that will transport you to Brazil, Cuba, Peru, Cape Verde, France, Spain, New Zealand and around the United States.

The concert, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with refreshments available, precedes the first of two performances by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday (April 28-29). Tickets required: online; by telephone, (530) 754-2787 or (866) 754-2787; or in person.

The open house with refreshments is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon in the center's Yocha Dehe Grand Lobby.

You can purchase subscriptions there, of course, or you do so online; by telephone, (530) 754-2787 or (866) 754-2787; or in person (the box office is open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday).

The deadline for renewals is May 31. Single-event tickets are set to go on sale in early August.

Poster celebrates center's 10th anniversary season

The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts is offering patrons a fun to remember the center’s 10th anniversary season, which wraps up in May.

The remembrance is a poster of legendary cartoonist Jules Feiffer’s vibrant Dancer — who, back in October, came to life on the Jackson Hall stage to help launch the 2012-13 season. Music and choreography added to this “Mondavi Moment,” during which more than 200 people took to the stage to dance with the cartoon.

For the celebratory poster, commissioned by the Mondavi Center, Feiffer’s Dancer comes to life at the center’s front door. Fittingly, center officials said, the Dancer’s lively and joyous appearance reflects the same energetic and inspiring moments that all kinds of artists brought to the center in its first decade.

The poster comes in two sizes: 20 inches by 30 inches ($35) and 11 inches by 14 inches ($25), and can be ordered online or purchased at the Mondavi Center Gift Shop and UC Davis Stores (main bookstore, Memorial Union).

A limited edition of 100 posters signed by Feiffer will be available for $250 each starting Monday, April 29. For more information on the limited edition posters, contact Elisha Findley (530) 754-5436.

All proceeds go to Friends of the Mondavi Center.
