THE ARTS: Jazz, baroque concerts; Leon Fleisher is back; Mala Punica's journey

JAZZ, BAROQUE CONCERTS: The UC Davis music department's concert schedule includes these two events in the coming weeks:

-- Jazz Band -- 8 p.m. Feb. 20, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. This group is perhaps better known as the Wednesday Night Big Band. (This concert originally was scheduled for a week later.) Program information was not available by press time. -- Early Music and Baroque ensembles -- 8 p.m. March 1, St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorne Lane, Davis. Program: 17th-century German string music by Biber, Rosenmüller and Schmelzer, along with Italian vocal-instrumental works by Monteverdi and Rovetta. Suggested donations at the door: $12 adults, $6 students and children.

LEON FLEISHER IS BACK: Pianist Leon Fleisher achieved worldwide acclaim in the 1950s and '60s, then lost the use of his right hand due to focal dystonia, a neurological condition affecting a muscle or muscles. He performed left-handed compositions until recently when new therapies allowed him to use use his right hand again.

He is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 29 in the Mondavi Center's Jackson Hall.

MALA PUNICA'S JOURNEY: The early music ensemble Mala Punica is scheduled to perform a pair of concerts and present a symposium at UC Davis in early March, as part of the Mondavi Center's Creativity Project.

The vocal and instrumental group, led by flautist and visiting artist-in-residence Pedro Memelsdorff, plans to perform Iter Ytalicum, a journey through trecento Italy. Mala Punica (literally, pomegranates) is devoted to the music of the trecento (14th century) and Ars Subtilior in Italy, a repertory that has been called the avant-garde of medieval Europe.

The concerts are scheduled at 2 and 7 p.m. March 2 in the Studio Theatre. Tickets: (530) 754-2787 or (866) 754-2787, or www.mondaviarts.org.

The symposium, titled Compositional Processes, is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. March 3, also in the Studio Theatre. Organizers said the symposium is free and open to the public.
