FRESA Y CHOCOLATE: The Department of Spanish and Portuguese plans a lecture and film program Nov. 5 in the Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

The film is the Cuban-Spanish-Mexican production Fresa y Chocolate (Strawberry and Chocolate), in Spanish with English subtitles, to be shown at 7 p.m. Department Chair Emilio Bejel is set to deliver a 6:30 p.m. lecture, "Strawberry and Chocolate: Cuban Political Rectification or Veiled Homophobia?"

GAMELAN ÇUDAMANI: Gamelan Çudamani from Bali is set to perform Nov. 16 at the Mondavi Center. The troupe of 21 musicians and 10 dancers is scheduled to present a show titled Odalan Bali, recreating a Hindu temple ceremony.

Odalan Bali places sacred costumes and rituals within a theatrical narrative in "a powerful, exotic and beautiful expression of Balinese spirituality and community," a Mondavi Center news release states.

"Gamelan," derived from the Javanese term meaning to "strike" or "hammer," refers to a kind of traditional musical ensemble unique to Indonesia. Tuned percussion instruments such as metallophones, gongs and xylophones tend to dominate the sound.

Gamelan Çudamani's performance is set for 8 p.m. in Jackson Hall. A lecture by Assistant Professor Henry Spiller, director of the UC Davis Gamelan Ensemble, is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the AGR Room at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.

MORE AT THE MONDAVI: Russia's oldest and most acclaimed orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Mondavi Center's Jackson Hall. The program is all Prokofiev: a suite from the ballet Romeo and Juliet, plus Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, op. 100, often considered Prokofiev's peak achievement in the symphonic realm and a piece widely revered for its exotic melodies and triumphant finale.

A preperformance lecture by Professor D. Kern Holoman, conductor of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the AGR Room at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.

SYMPHONY AND JAZZ BAND: The University Symphony Orchestra's program for Nov. 18 includes Mahler's Symphony No. 1, also known as Titan. Last week's Dateline incorrectly listed Titan as the common name of another piece.

The orchestra program also includes Bach's Cantata No. 82, Ich habe genug (I Have Enough), featuring baritone Jeremy Galyon, a San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow; and Beethoven's Egmont overture. The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center.

The UC Davis Jazz Band and Jazz Improv combo are scheduled to perform a concert at 8 p.m. in the Mondavi Center's Studio Theatre.

CRAFT CENTER SHOW, SALE: The Craft Center announced that its sixth annual Gallery Show and Silent Auction will begin Nov. 9, with auction proceeds benefitting center programs. The show will feature jewelry, glass, textiles, ceramics, metal, wood, photography, painting, drawing, screen printing and mixed media.

A closing reception is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7. Silent bidding will end at 6 p.m. that day, and, for any items with interested active bidders, a live auction will commence.
