THE ARTS: 5 nights of jazz, gospel choir plans free Noon Concert, Global Beat presents Kodo and The Chieftains

5 NIGHTS OF JAZZ: The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts is turning its Studio Theatre into a jazz club, with seating at small tables, for Joey DeFrancesco, who is scheduled to perform with his trio at 8 o'clock nightly Jan. 23 to 27. DeFrancesco, a former Miles Davis sideman, is widely recognized as a master of groove-oriented organ jazz in the Jimmy Smith tradition.

GOSPEL CHOIR PLANS FREE NOON CONCERT: The Department of Music's Noon Concert series continues next week with a performance by the UC Davis Gospel Choir. The free concert is scheduled to begin at 12:05 p.m. Thursday in Wright Hall's Main Theatre.

GLOBAL BEAT: KODO AND THE CHIEFTAINS: The Mondavi Center's Global Beat series offers back-to-back concerts next week:

• Kodo --A Japanese troupe described as "percussion kamikazes," presenting a mix of traditional and progressive taiko drumming, with a rich visual spectacle. 8 p.m. Jan. 30, Jackson Hall.

• The Chieftains --A Celtic group with 43 albums in 43 years to its credit, to be accompanied at the Mondavi Center by six guest musicians and the six-member, all-female Líadan, also performing Celtic music. 8 p.m. Jan. 31, Jackson Hall.
