THE ARTS

International Film Series

Two more films remain in the 2009-10 International Film Series at the International House:

June 4 — Immortal Beloved (1994, United Kingdom-United States). Based on the life of Ludwig Van Beethoven (portrayed by Gary Oldham), this drama centers on a letter in Beethoven's will, a letter to his "immortal beloved," and efforts by a Beethoven confidante, after the composer's death in 1827, to learn the woman's identity.

June 18 — Son of the Bride (2001, Argentina). About a workaholic restaurateur, Rafael Belvedere (Ricardo Darin), who neglects those closest to him; a health crisis that forces Rafael to deal with his past and face his future with a more mature realization of what is important in life; and the wedding of Rafael's parents — a ceremony planned as a substitute for the fancy ceremony they never had. Rafael's mother suffers from Alzheimer's disease, a subject treated with understanding, tact and humor. Nominated for an Academy Award in 2002 for best foreign language film.

The bimonthly film programs begin with refreshments at 7:30 p.m., and the films start at 8 p.m. sharp. Admission is free, with donations welcome to help cover the cost of video-DVD rental, refreshments and use of the facility.

I-House is at 10 College Park, across from Howard Way where it intersects with Russell Boulevard at the north edge of the campus. Telephone: (530) 753-5007. E-mail: office@internationalhousedavis.org.

Cirque Éloize cancels

The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts announced that Cirque Éloize has canceled its 2011 North American tour, which included two performances at the Mondavi Center, April 9-10.

Jeremy Ganter, the Mondavi Center’s associate executive director, said Columbia Artists Management, representing Cirque Éloize, attributed the tour’s cancellation to financial reasons.

The modern-day circus had been one of two shows in the center’s 2010-11 Marvels series; the other show, featuring MOMIX, is still set for a two-day run, 8 p.m. Jan. 29 and 3 p.m. Jan. 30.

The Mondavi Center gave these options for people who purchased the Marvels series or who included Cirque Éloize in a choose-your-own plan or as an add-on event:

Exchange your Cirque Éloize tickets for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater tickets, for a performance at 8 p.m. April 5 or 8 p.m. April 6. Marvels renewing subscribers will retain their seat locations.

Use your credit toward any other another performance in the 2010-11 season.

Receive a refund for the value of your Cirque Éloize tickets.

For more information on exchanges and refunds, contact the box office, (530) 754-2787 or (866) 754-2787. The box office is normally open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Note: The box office will be closed May 29-31 for the Memorial Day weekend.
