Beethoven at the I-House

The International House invites you to listen to some of Ludwig von Beethoven's music and see a film about his life, June 3 and 4:

June 3 — An evening of classical music with the Picasso Street Trio (all connected to UC Davis), performing Beethoven's Serenade in D Major, for violin, viola and flute. 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7).

The women of the Picasso Street Trio met through UC Davis: Begona Ascaso (viola), a postdoctoral scholar in astrophysics, Jacqueline Hodge (flute), a graduate student in astrophysics; and Serena Williams (violin), a graduate student in linguistics. According to the I-House newsletter, the trio plans to disband later in June, allowing the members to pursue career and personal interests abroad and close to Davis.).

With such an unusual combination of instruments, the women have prepared most of thetheir own arrangements. Then, in 2009, the trio discovered Beethoven's Serenade in D Major — the era's only work written specifically for violin, viola and flute — and they plan to play it in its entirety in their June 3 concert.

June 4 — The International Film Series presents Immortal Beloved, based von Beethoven's life. See more information below.

The concert and film are free and open to the public, with donations welcome. I-House is at 10 College Park, across from Howard Way where it intersects with Russell Boulevard at the north edge of the campus. Telephone: (530) 753-5007. E-mail: office@internationalhousedavis.org.

I-House film series

Two more films remain in the 2009-10 International Film Series at the International House:

June 4 — Immortal Beloved (1994, United Kingdom-United States). Based on the life of Ludwig Van Beethoven (portrayed by Gary Oldham), this drama centers on a letter in Beethoven's will, a letter to his "immortal beloved," and efforts by a Beethoven confidante, after the composer's death in 1827, to learn the woman's identity. (More Beethoven news: The I-House will host the Picasso Street Trio for a June 3 performance of his Serenade in D Major. See more information above.)

June 18 — Son of the Bride (2001, Argentina). About a workaholic restaurateur, Rafael Belvedere (Ricrado Darin) who neglects those closest to him; a health crisis that forces Rafael to deal with his past and face his future with a more mature realization of what is important in life; and the wedding of Rafael's parents — a ceremony planned as a substitute for the fancy ceremony they never had. Rafael's mother suffers from Alzheimer's disease, a subject treated with understanding, tact and humor. Nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign language drama.

The bimonthly film programs begin with refreshments at 7:30 p.m., and the films start at 8 p.m. sharp. Admission is free, with donations welcome to help cover the cost of video-DVD rental, refreshments and use of the facility.

Cirque Éloize cancels

The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts announced that Cirque Éloize has canceled its 2011 North American tour, which included two performances at the Mondavi Center, April 9-10.

Jeremy Ganter, the Mondavi Center’s associate executive director, said Columbia Artists Management, representing Cirque Éloize, attributed the tour’s cancellation to financial reasons.

The modern-day circus had been one of two shows in the center’s 2010-11 Marvels series; the other show, featuring MOMIX, is still set for a two-day run, 8 p.m. Jan. 29 and 3 p.m. Jan. 30.

The Mondavi Center gave these options for people who purchased the Marvels series or who included Cirque Éloize in a choose-your-own plan or as an add-on event:

Exchange your Cirque Éloize tickets for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater tickets, for a performance at 8 p.m. April 5 or 8 p.m. April 6. Marvels renewing subscribers will retain their seat locations.

Use your credit toward any other another performance in the 2010-11 season.

Receive a refund for the value of your Cirque Éloize tickets.

For more information on exchanges and refunds, contact the box office, (530) 754-2787 or (866) 754-2787. The box office is normally open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Note: The box office will be closed May 29-31 for the Memorial Day weekend.
