March 8, Monday -- The story of the last survivor of California's Yahi tribe will be analyzed by Duke University anthropologist Orin Starr in a talk titled "Ishi's Brain: History, Culture and the Politics of Memory." Starr's talk, as well as his latest book, "Ishi's Brain: In Search of America's Last 'Wild' Indian" (2004), explores and addresses questions of violence and conquest, the history of the West, and the relation between anthropology and indigenous peoples. He is working on a documentary film based on this book and appears in the recent PBS documentary on Native American repatriation, "Who Owns the Past?" Starr's talk begins at 4 p.m. in the Andrews Conference Room, 2203 Social Sciences and Humanities Building. It is open to the public.
