Aggies arrived by the thousands in Berkeley on Sept. 4, using bus, train, BART, car and foot to watch our first football game in 71 years against Cal.

The sun was shining. UC Davis students and alumni cheered themselves hoarse. The Band-uh, at 100 strong, played in the stands and on the field while cheerleaders kept up our spirits and fans blew their blast air horns.

We watched our Aggie team, only three years into the Division 1-AA, try its hardest against overwhelming odds and a bigger Division 1 team. We had hopes. We did beat Stanford, 20-17, in 2005.

A 30-point spread was predicted for this game. What’s another 19 points?

UC Davis fans left Memorial Stadium with a 52-3 defeat, keeping our pompoms and blue and gold beads as souvenirs of an historical game.

We didn’t care that we lost — too much. We’ll always have Stanford.
