ADVOCATE FORE HEALTH...

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation employee Sandy Walsh shows off the Web site for Y-ME, a support organization she co-founded that serves women who are affected by cancer and their families. Walsh was named fall Woman of the Quarter by the Women's Resources and Research Center. The staff research associate at the Center for the Study of Neuromuscular Diseases was chosen, among other reasons, for being a dedicated resource for women with cancer. "This has been one of the most rewarding things in my life, apart from my children," says Walsh of her work with Y-ME. She also is president of the California Breast Cancer Organizations, a coalition that advocates for cancer legislation. Walsh is herself a cancer survivor; she was diagnosed in 1984 and says she received broad support from friends, coworkers and family. "It was hard not to worry; but my philosophy is not to worry about things that you cannot do anything about," Walsh says. When she's not helping others or conducting campus muscular dystrophy research, Walsh can often be found pursuing another of her longtime passions -- golf.
