Acting Divisional Deans Chosen for College of Letters and Science

Three newly formed divisions within the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Davis, will soon have acting deans. Chancellor Larry N. Vanderhoef has recommended to UC President Jack W. Peltason the appointment of Professor D. Kern Holoman to head the Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies; Professor Barbara D. Metcalf to direct the Division of Social Sciences; and Professor Peter A. Rock to lead the Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The three would serve from March 15, 1995 through June 30, 1996. Searches for permanent deans would be undertaken during the 1995-96 academic year. "I'm delighted that Professor Holoman, Professor Metcalf and Professor Rock have agreed to assume these important roles," Vanderhoef said. "Each has the proven leadership experience and skills, as well as scholarly attainment, to be highly effective in the position." The three divisions were established after a year-long process of review and consultation regarding the college's structure. Each of the college's departments and units will align itself with one of the new divisions. "The task of choosing only one acting dean for each of the divisions was made all the more difficult because of the number of talented and experienced individuals willing to assume these responsibilities," said Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Robert D. Grey, "but the array of leadership talent bodes well for the future of the college. I look forward to working with the three who were selected and I'm confident that they will serve the college and the campus well in these next months as the reorganization proceeds." Holoman, professor of music, is chair of the Department of Dramatic Art. He joined the UC Davis faculty in 1974 and served as chair of the music department from 1980 to 1988 and as conductor of the UCD Symphony Orchestra since 1981. Named "Chevalier" by the Ordres des Arts et des Lettres of the Republic of France, he is the 1995 recipient of the $25,000 UC Davis Prize for Teaching and Scholarly Achievement. He holds a bachelor's degree from Duke University and master's and doctoral degrees from Princeton University. Metcalf, professor of history, joined the UC Davis faculty in 1986. Chair of the Department of History from 1991 to 1994, she is a widely published expert in the field of Asian studies and the current president of the Association for Asian Studies. She has received numerous grants and awards, and served as a fellow at the National Humanities Center in 1989-90. She received a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College, a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. Rock, professor of chemistry, joined the UC Davis faculty in 1964 and served as chair of the Department of Chemistry from 1980 to 1985. He is a physical chemist with research interests in chemical thermodynamics, geochemistry, urolithiasis, isotope effects, and energy utilization and conversion, with an emphasis on electrochemical cells and fuel properties. He holds a bachelor's degree from Boston University and a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. "All three of these individuals are sensible, thoughtful and broadly educated," said Carol Tomlinson-Keasey, dean of the College of Letters and Science. "They will form a forceful team to move the college forward."
