Academic blueprint unveiled

After three years of planning and development, the UC Davis Academic Plan's Capstone Report has been drafted and is ready for campus discussion.

Through May 14, Provost Robert Grey and members of the Academic Planning Council are seeking comments on the report, designed as a blueprint to guide UC Davis through "Tidal Wave II" -- the expected addition of about 5,000 new students and more than 200 faculty members over the next decade.

The Capstone Report, available on the Internet, summarizes the campus's academic vision and some specific plans for its expansion. "We assumed at the outset that that the decisions made during this critical history of UC Davis would set the trajectory for the campus's future," Grey said.

The plan calls for the development of two new schools by 2006, the Graduate School of the Environment and a School of Education. Among existing academic units, the College of Engineering and the College of Letters and Science are scheduled to receive the biggest boost in enrollment and faculty. The proposal also includes the creation of nine interdisciplinary academic initiatives, such as the centers for Technocultural Studies, Mind Sciences and Genomics as well as the Hemispheric Institute of the Americas and Nanophases in the Environment, Agriculture and Technology.

Along with the campus-wide focus of the Academic Plan, each UC Davis college and school was also asked to develop its own goals for the decade ahead. These visions are also included in the Capstone Report.

After receiving all campus comments on the report draft, the council will review them and meet with him to discuss their final recommendations on the report, Grey said.
