8 acres of roses in full bloom: Come for plant sale, free tours

Rose Day on April 25 is not just for people in the industry. Afternoon tours of Foundation Plant Services and a rose sale at the same place are open to the public with no admission charge.

Rose Day, presented by UC Davis' California Center for Urban Horticulture and Foundation Plant Services, starts with a symposium and lunch in the Mondavi Center's Studio Theatre.

Rose enthusiasts and avid gardeners are expected to join national and international leaders for discussion of production, hybridization and breeding, marketing and pest-disease issues. The registration fee is $150, or $75 for students, staff, faculty and other university affiliates (including master gardeners and Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum).

Free tours at Foundation Plant Services, where some eight acres of roses are expected to be in full bloom, are scheduled every half-hour from 2 to 5 p.m.

The rose sale also will run from 2 to 5 p.m. Organizers said recent All-American Rose Selection winners will be among 14 varieties available for sale in #5 containers (3.7 gallons). The price is $25 per plant.

Foundation Plant Services is at the southwest corner of Hopkins and Straloch roads, south of Hutchison Drive on the west side of Highway 113. (Map: fpms.ucdavis.edu/map.html.)

Rose Day is a fundraiser for the newly established California Center for Urban Horticulture.
