5 scholarships boost staff education plans

Staff Assembly on Oct. 13 presented its staff scholarships and staff dependent scholarships for 2008-09. The presentations occurred during Staff Assembly's Fall Meeting in MU II at the Memorial Union.

Scholarship program Chair Jesse Avitia, bookkeeper for the Department of Art and Art History, presented the awards.

Staff scholarships went to:

-- Cynthia J. Lewis, a Davis resident who works as an administrative assistant at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

-- Erica Jill Brown, a Davis resident who works as member services coordinator for Campus Recreation.

-- Kassandra Marie Perlongo of Sacramento. She was an administrative assistant in Academic Personnel at the time she applied for a staff scholarship, but has since left the university to concentrate on her studies.

All three women attend California State University, Sacramento, and each received a $500 scholarship.

Staff dependent scholarships went to:

-- Kristi Rose Kilpatrick of Woodland, daughter of John and Mary Kilpatrick. Mary Kilpatrick is business office manager for the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Kristi Kilpatrick is a transfer student from American River College, starting at UC Davis this quarter as a third-year student majoring in genetics. She received a $1,000 scholarship.

-- Allison Frances Prather of Dixon, daughter of Julia A. Prather, management services officer, Department of Geology.

Allison Prather is a transfer student from Solano Community College, starting at UC Davis this quarter as a third-year student majoring in sociology. She received a $750 award.

While staff scholarships have long been a Staff Assembly tradition, the staff dependent scholarships are only in their second year.

Proceeds from the sale of Staff Assembly lapel pins help support the dependent scholarships. The pins cost $5 apiece; checks should be made payable to the UC Board of Regents and sent via campus mail to Staff Assembly or delivered to the assembly's office in the Human Resources Administration Building (Orchard Road just west of La Rue Road).

Eligibility for staff dependent scholarships is limited to UC Davis students, while staff scholarship recipients can attend any college.

Staff scholarship money comes from an endowment fund that began in 1981 with $7,500 in donations; the money had been collected in the form of memorial tributes to Margene Orzalli, a longtime employee.

The application period for 2009-10 scholarships will open in January, said Tiva Lasiter, coordinator of Staff Assembly. Information will be posted on the Staff Assembly Web site: staff.ucdavis.edu.
