Participants at the UC Davis Chancellor's Fall Conference, split into three discipline-related work groups, delivered recommendations for strengthening academic research.
Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies and Social Sciences
Establish a task force to consider the research needs of the divisions of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies and of Social Sciences, including new facilities, graduate fellowships and time for creative activity
Increase funding for technical support
Boost funding for the Davis Humanities Institute and the Institute of Governmental Affairs
Create a liaison in the Office of Research and place representatives on campus resource allocation committees
Develop measures to achieve "co-prosperity" for the two divisions while maintaining academic freedom
Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine
Streamline construction of new laboratories and core facilities
Establish parity across departments to ensure equal access and ability to use funds from "percent effort" on grants
Increase the size and independence of the Office of Research, determining need for a director of research for humanities and increasing legal counsel
Strategically invest in core facilities, tapping such outside resources as industry and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and including subsidized animal care
Develop infrastructure to facilitate university-industry interaction, emphasizing both cutting-edge research and graduate student training
Implement the recommendations of the Task Force on Graduate Student Support
Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering
Identify best practices at UC campuses and elsewhere to streamline research decisions and day-to-day operations
Build high-quality research space to recruit excellent faculty, and provide facilities, equipment and staff support
Hire professional fund-raisers of a number and caliber appropriate to a major university, and raise funds from companies hiring a large percentage of UC Davis graduates
Improve national rankings by completing forms correctly, providing information to those influencing the rankings and organizing efforts to nominate best scholars for honors, prizes, national academy memberships
Increase portion of indirect costs returned to a project's principal investigator and research unit
