Karyl Ketchum takes a break in her office, surrounded by images relevant to her research of the effects of fashion on gender, race and class. The Women's Resources and Research Center's Woman of the Winter Quarter, she is teaching assistant coordinator for Women and Gender studies. Ketchum, a doctoral student, helps train TAs to create learning environments that foster communication even in the presence of conflicting experiences and beliefs. "This work is, I believe, critical; afterall, how can nations and religions 'speak to be understood and listen to understand,' if we cannot even do this at the level of the individual."
