PUNCH BROTHERS: Widely regarded as one of the most interesting and inventive musicians of his generation, composer-performer Chris Thile has changed the mandolin forever, elevating it from its origins as a relatively simple folk and bluegrass instrument to the sophistication and brilliance of jazz improvisation and classical performance. He played with Nickel Creek for 15 years, and now he is with the Punch Brothers — a group that is headed for the Mondavi Center for a concert at 8 p.m. Feb. 14 in Jackson Hall. A related lecture by Joe Craven of the Joe Craven Trio is set for 7 p.m. in the AGR Room, Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center.

SONNET WALK: How about this for Valentine’s Day? A walk around Davis and in the UC Davis arboretum, while listening to a performance of Shakespeare’s love poems? Everyone is invited, free of charge, to this Feb. 14 production by the Department of Theatre and Dance, in collaboration with the arboretum and the Mondavi Center. The first guided stroll is scheduled for 10 a.m., with subsequent strolls departing every 15 minutes until the last stroll leaves at noon. Each walk will last about an hour, and refreshments will be served about halfway through. Advance reservations are required. Read more about the sonnet walk.

Tickets and reservations: (530) 754-2787 or (866) 754-2787, or www.mondaviarts.org. (When making online reservations for the sonnet walk, use the promo code SONNET to avoid handling charges).
