UPDATED: Police oversight forums continue Thursday, Friday

A proposal to establish an oversight board for the UC Davis Police Department is being presented at open forums this week on the Davis and Sacramento campuses.

The proposal is drawn in part from a consultant's report, "Developing Oversight, Transparency and Accountability for the University of California, Davis, Police Department,” now available online. The consultant, Barbara J. Attard of Accountability Associates, prepared her report after a series of campus forums last spring.

Today (Oct. 16), at the first forum, campus officials said they had customized the consultant's recommendations to fit UC Davis — and presented graphics to show how the proposed oversight model would work. See the slideshow.

A flow chart shows how the process starts, from the time a complaint comes in to either the Police Department or the Office of Compliance. Each would have access to specialized computer software, to input the complaint and gather all the relevant documents.

Another graphic tracks the case from investigation to oversight board to a finding and a recommendation to the chief of police. After that, the chief accepts or rejects the finding, and issues a notification of finding to the complainant.

Two meetings were held today on the Davis campus and one more Davis meeting is scheduled: 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 17) at the Student Community Center, specifically in Meeting Room D (which is a different room than previously announced).

And two will be held on the Sacramento campus:
