Humphrey fellows and Fulbright students from around the world are making stopovers at UC Davis this summer.

UC Davis Extension’s Center for International Education provides pre-academic and orientation programs for the foreign fellows and students, who are en route to their host institutions across the country.

But UC Davis gets something out of the deal, too: a series of global forums where the students and fellows introduce themselves and talk about their research topics and fields of interest.

The forums, free and open to the public, are scheduled as follows:

• Fulbright students — 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.

• Humphrey fellows — 1-5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3.

• Humphrey fellows — 2-5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9.

All three will be held at International House, 10 College Place, across from Howard Way on the campus’s northern boundary. Refreshments and light snacks will be served.

This year marks the first time UC Davis Extension is providing orientation for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, under which graduate students, young professionals and artists come to the United States for research and study for one year or longer at universities or other appropriate institutions. The exchange program is part of the State Department’s Fulbright Program.

Thirty Fulbright students arrived at UC Davis Extension in mid-July for a three-week program that focuses on academic and English-language skills. The orientation program also touches on the U.S. academic culture, intercultural awareness and adapting to the U.S. culture.

“The emphasis is on practical application in real-life situations, so scholars gain the cultural ability to associate what they know in their various fields with what they are experiencing in their new environment,” states a news release from UC Davis Extension.

A number of cultural events and activities, including volunteer experiences in Sacramento, have been organized to give participants a full view of life in the United States and on U.S. campuses, making adaptation to their new cultural environment easier and fostering receptivity to academic life in the United States.

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is for midcareer professionals from designated countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Eurasia. The fellows come to the United States for a year of non-degree study and related professional experience.

Nearly 30 fellows are due to participate in the Humphrey Fellow Global Forums.

The fellows work in communications and journalism; economic development, finance and banking; HIV-AIDS policy and prevention; higher education and medical administration; human resource management; human trafficking policy and prevention; law and human rights; natural resources, environmental policy and climate change; public health policy and management; substance abuse education, treatment and prevention; urban and regional planning.
