WHO: Jeffrey Toobin, CNN senior legal analyst, author (The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court) and staff writer for The New Yorker.

WHAT: "One-Hundred Years: A Look Inside the Supreme Court." For this talk, a UC Davis Centennial event, Toobin plans to intertwine stories of the Supreme Court and the history of UC Davis. Distinguished Speakers Series.

WHEN: Oct. 10

WHO: George Mitchell, former Senate majority leader (as a Democrat from Maine). In his post-Senate life, he brokered a landmark peace accord in Northern Ireland, and, for his effort, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

WHAT: "From Northern Ireland to the Ballpark," referring to his diplomacy and his recent investigation for Major League Baseball, looking into steroid use. Distinguished Speakers Series.

WHEN: Nov. 19

WHO: Tracy Kidder, author.

WHAT: "The Problem With Goodness: The Story of Paul Farmer." Farmer is the subject of Kidder's book Mountains Beyond Mountains: A Man Who Could Cure the World, this year's Campus Community Book Project.

WHEN: Dec. 1

Coming in 2009: Political activist and feminist Gloria Steinem (Jan. 16), former "child soldier" Ishmael Beah (April 8), and film writer, director and producer Paul Haggis (May 11).
