UC Davis Administration Vice Chancellor to Step Down

Janet C. Hamilton, vice chancellor for administration at the University of California, Davis, since 1991, will depart her post on Feb. 1, 2003, capping a 28-year career at the Davis campus.

Hamilton's broad portfolio includes human resources, employee health, accounting, facilities, architects and engineers, campus events, fire, police, parking and transportation, materiel management, reprographics, mail, agricultural services, risk management, mediation services, business contracts and environmental health and safety.

Stan Nosek, associate vice chancellor for business services, will step into Hamilton's role when she departs and will serve until a national search for her successor is completed.

"Janet has one of the most difficult and complex jobs on this campus, and she has performed it with great skill and professionalism," said UC Davis Chancellor Larry N. Vanderhoef. "She is recognized within the UC system and nationally for her leadership qualities, problem-solving skills and business acumen. There's no doubt this campus is in a better place today for having had the benefit of her wisdom and dedication."

Hamilton noted in particular her unit's efforts to simplify administrative approaches, to put systems and processes in place to best serve the campus's 21st-century needs, and to model strong business ethics, customer service and personal and organizational accountability.

"A person in a position such as this one, with such broad responsibility and authority, has to learn early on that successes are achieved through collaboration and cooperation, that any accomplishments are through the work of others and that hiring and supporting good people is the most important thing one does," Hamilton said. "I am most proud of having put together an organization of people capable of accomplishing so much. I have had the privilege of working with a fabulous team both inside my organization and across the campus."

Nosek has served as associate vice chancellor for business services since 2001, with responsibility for leading initiatives that span all of the office's units and for services that have campuswide impact.

"Stan is a long-time campus citizen with depth and breadth in the areas under the purview of the vice chancellor for administration," said Vanderhoef. "He possesses gold-standard integrity and exceptional management ability. He couldn't be better prepared -- or the campus better served -- when he steps into this post."

Nosek credited his preparation to Hamilton's mentorship.

"Janet has developed a culture within our division that values and recognizes our excellent staff, is customer-focused, seeks to improve business processes, and demands fiscal integrity," Nosek said. "I look forward to continuing and building upon these principles while serving the campus and our staff as a steward of the resources entrusted to the vice chancellor position."

Hamilton received a bachelor's of science degree in journalism from the University of Kansas in 1966. Early in her career, she served as a reporter for the Salina (Kansas) Journal, and as assistant director of information services and then staff assistant in the Office of the Vice President for Business and Finance at the University of Washington.

In 1974 she came to the UC Davis campus as a senior writer in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The following year, she joined the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance as a staff analyst. During 1979-80, Hamilton was awarded a management fellowship in that office, and from 1980 to 1982 served as business services manager. She was appointed associate vice chancellor for business affairs in 1982.

Nosek has served the campus for 26 years, the past 11 years within the Office of Administration as executive assistant to the vice chancellor, information practices coordinator, director of event management and administrative services and assistant vice chancellor for administration. He also completed a temporary assignment as executive director of human resources and is currently serving as interim executive director of facilities.

Nosek came to UC Davis in 1976, first serving as assistant director of residence life, then as assistant business manager of student housing, and director of the Campus Events and Information Office before joining the Office of Administration.

He received a bachelor's of science degree in psychology/mathematics from the State University College at Oneonta, N.Y., in 1969, and a master's degree in student personnel from the State University of New York at Albany in 1970.
