UC, CUE reach tentative agreement

The University of California and Coalition of University Employees (CUE) have reached a tentative agreement on a first contract for the clerical and allied services bargaining unit.

The tentative agreement provides wage increases for 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 budget years.

The contract would expire Sept. 30, 2001.

The university’s 2001-02 proposed budget, which was presented to the UC Board of Regents this week, includes an additional augmentation for staff salaries that lag behind the market averages.

The UC-CUE tentative wage agreement for clerical staff includes the following:

• Effective Oct. 1, 1999: 2.8 percent salary range adjustment.

• Effective Oct. 1, 1999: Regular merit increase for eligible employees.

• Effective July 1, 2000: 2 percent salary range adjustment.

• Effective Oct. 1, 2000: 2 percent salary range adjustment.

• Effective Oct. 1, 2000: Regular merit increase for eligible employees.

• Effective Oct. 1, 2000: An additional step to the maximum of the salary range.

• Effective Sept. 1, 2001: 1 percent salary range adjustment.

• Plus $100 to each career employee on the date both parties sign the agreement.

CUE represents approximately 18,000 clerical employees at UC.

"I appreciate and respect the work and efforts of all the parties," said Dennis Shimek, UC Davis associate vice chancellor for human resources. "I look forward to building a long-term professional and respectful relationship with the leadership of CUE. I am particularly thankful that we can now implement the well-deserved salary increases for our important clerical employees."

UC also has reached tentative contract agreements with three other unions.

On Oct. 30, UC and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) reached a tentative agreement for 2000-01 wages and a new Veterans Day holiday for the service employees unit.

Moreover, on Nov. 6, UC reached a similar agreement with the AFSCME patient care technical unit.

UC and the Federated University Police Officer Association reached a tentative agreement for UC police officers on Oct. 27 on 2000-01 wages and increasing family sick leave for officers.

"We are very pleased to have reached tentative contract agreements in these four negotiations," said Judith W. Boyette, UC associate vice president for human resources and benefits. "We are particularly proud to have reached our first tentative agreement with CUE on the clerical unit contract. Many of these contracts contain the first steps in a multiyear plan to bring our employees‚ salaries up to market averages."
