Suspect in custody in sexual assaults

A suspect is in custody following two sexual assaults that took place on the UC Davis campus Tuesday evening.

Campus police had issued an automated alert via text messaging and cell phone calls about 11 p.m. following the assaults, which took place on a bicycle path near the ARC Pavilion about 8.30 p.m.. The suspect also assaulted a police officer before running off.

The search continued until police arrested Robert Schaerges, 26, a student, shortly after issuing the alert messages. He is being transferred to Yolo County Jail charged with two counts of sexual battery, one count of false imprisonment and one count of assaulting a peace officer. UC Davis police are also investigating additional incidents in connection with the case.
