SURREAL SCENE...

Campus visitors Jillian and Jason Rifkind check out the nooks, crannies and subtle features of The Palace at 9 A.M., a colossal glazed earthenware piece on display in the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. The Palace was created by Egghead sculptor Robert Arneson in 1974 and depicts a scene from outside the late UC Davis professor's home, at the corner of Alice and L streets in Davis. The 70-square-foot work was assembled in 17 pieces, each arriving in crates weighing about 300 pounds, says Director and Curator of the Nelson Gallery Bob Riley, who helped with The Palace's assembly last week. Part of the campus's fine arts collection, it will be on display in the center until Oct. 8. The NELSON ARTfriends group has been raising money as part of a $100,000 campaign to complete final purchase of the work.
