Student arrested in Hillel House flag theft case

The city of Davis Police Department arrested a UC Davis freshman April 29 in connection with the April 19 theft of the Hillel House flag, according to the department's public information officer.

Jowad Bassam Younis, 19, has been charged with possession of stolen property and a hate crime related to national origin.

A note found at Hillel House after the theft read "Death to Israel. Long live the intifada."

The city police department will also be asking the district attorney to charge Younis with petty theft and vandalism and a hate crime count in connection with an August 2003 theft of a flag and writing on the Hillel House.

Younis was identified by an anonymous caller as being responsible for the April 19 theft and possibly for the August theft as well. Police detectives followed up on the information, ultimately discovering evidence that led to Younis' arrest.

With the assistance of the UC Davis Police Department, the city police arrested Younis in his Pierce Hall room at about 8:30 a.m. and took him to the Yolo County Jail.

Younis is a civil engineering major who started at UC Davis in fall 2003. He is a Davis resident.
