SEMINARS AND COLLOQUIA: 'The Science of 9-11'; Storer Lectureship; Human rights debate; 'Empires, Diasporas'; Feminism in the arts

'THE SCIENCE OF 9-11': Zoology professor emeritus Kenneth Watt announced a presentation by Richard Gage: "9-11 Blueprint for Truth -- The Science of 9-11," described as "an alternative to the official theory of how the three World Trade Center towers failed symmetrically and completely, collapsing at near free-fall speed."

Watt said Gage brings his architectural training to bear on what he believes is a key question for all building professionals to consider.

The program is set for 7:30 p.m. April 13 at the Varsity Theater, 616 Second St., Davis. General admission is $10, with students admitted for $5.

STORER LECTURESHIP: The College of Biological Sciences' Storer Lectureship presents two talks on genetics. Yale's Richard Lifton is set to speak in 1005 Genome and Biomedical Sciences Facility on these topics:

  • "Genetic Dissection of Common Disease: From Rare Mutations to Common Pathways," public lecture, 4:10 p.m. April 16.
  • "Genes for Heart, Kidney and Bone Disease: New Insights From Human Genetic Studies," scientific lecture, 12:10 p.m. April 17.

HUMAN RIGHTS DEBATE: The Newman Center's Jack Izzo announced that Aquiline Tarimo, who teaches social ethics at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, will deliver a talk, "Crisis In the International Human Rights Debate," at 7 p.m. April 16 in 2 Wellman Hall.

'EMPIRES, DISAPORAS': Maya Jasanoff, associate professor of history at Harvard, is due to visit UC Davis next week to give a talk titled "Empires and Diasporas," sponsored by the Center for History, Society and Culture.

Her talk, free and open to the public, is set for noon April 15 in the Andrews Conference Room, 2203 Social Sciences and Humanities Building.

FEMINISM IN THE ARTS: The Public Intellectuals Forum continues April 17 with "Feminist Public Intellectuals in the Arts — The Case of Playwright Wendy Wasserstein."

The presenter is Jill Dolan, drama professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Her talk is scheduled for 5 p.m., with a reception to follow at Historic City Hall, 226 F St., Davis. The event is free and open to the public.
