What do our hearts, campus trees and Aggie Pride have in common?

They are the beneficiaries of Run for Your Lives, comprising 5- and 10-kilometer races and a Kids Fun Run on Oct. 12. The UC Davis Buildings and Grounds Division is organizing the event to show that "our health as individuals is inextricably tied to the health of our environment."

And, whether you run or walk or just come by to cheer people on, everyone is invited to visit the Heart and Tree Health Pavilion at Toomey Field (along A Street), the starting and ending point for Run for Your Lives.

Registration is under way -- with all participants getting T-shirts, of course. Organizers said proceeds will be split among the UC Davis Vascular Center and the American Stroke Association, and the Buildings and Grounds Division, which intends to put its share toward tree plantings on the Davis campus.

Aggie Pride benefits, too, with participants invited to wear blue and gold or other outfits honoring UC Davis history. After all, Run for Your Lives is a UC Davis Centennial event!

Run for Your Lives is scheduled the same day as the Celebrate UC Davis! street fair, hosted by the city of Davis and the Davis Chamber of Commerce in recognition of the 100-year relationship between the city and the university.

With Run for Your Lives scheduled early in the day, participants also will have time to take in the street fair. It is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. along Third Street between the campus and G Street.

Run for Your Lives starting times are 8 a.m. for the 5- and 10K run-walks (winding through the arboretum and other parts of campus), and 10 a.m. for the Kids Fun Run (quarter-mile and half-mile distances).

The Toomey Field program includes music and refreshments starting at 8 a.m., and an awards ceremony and raffle at 10:30 a.m.

Advance registration can be accomplished online until midnight Oct. 9 at the following discounted rates:

-- Adults -- $25 through Sept. 26 or $27 Sept. 27-Oct. 9.

-- Students and children 12-17 -- $18 through Sept. 26 or $20 Sept. 27-Oct. 9.

-- Children 11 and under -- $10 through Sept. 26 or $12 Sept. 27-Oct. 9.

To register in person, go to the Buildings and Grounds office just to the west of the rear entrance to Wright Hall, on the west side of Lake Spafford. The last day to register at the office is Oct. 9.

The price goes up for people who register the day of the event: $30 for adults, $23 for students and children 12-17, and $15 for children 11 and under. Registration at Toomey Field is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m., concluding at 7:50 a.m. for the 5- and 10K run-walks, and 9:45 a.m. for the Kids Fun Run.

Organizers said they will present awards to the top three male and female finishers in nine age categories and a wheelchair division. The age categories are 11 and under, 12-17, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80 and up. Every Kids Fun Run participant will get a ribbon, organizers said.
