UC Davis' Kokua III sails past the San Francisco Ferry Building.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering normally uses the university-owned Kokua III sailboat for research, either for the department or for other programs around campus.

Associate Professor Frank Loge acquired the boat with grant funding, and used the Kokua III for fisheries research in the Pacific Ocean.

Now, as grant money comes and goes, there are times when the boat is idle. This has led to a collaboration with Campus Recreation’s Outdoor Adventures — which this spring launched a U.S. Sailing-certified program that uses the Kokua III to provide sailing opportunities for UC Davis faculty, staff and students.

Introduction to Sailing trips on San Francisco Bay began in April and are scheduled to continue through Sept. 7. Here are the remaining dates: June 13, 14 and 21; July 11; Aug. 2; and Sept. 7. Fees are $45 for UC Davis students or Activities and Recreation Center members, or $90 for non-students or non-ARC members.

Also planned is a July 4-5 overnight adventure taking in Alcatraz, Angel and Treasure islands, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Fireworks displays around the bay should be visible the night of the Fourth, fog permitting.
